After nearly a century of looking both inward and outward, Richard Mayhew creates what he calls “mindscapes,” the essence of places remembered or imagined. His brilliant paintings allude to an “invented consciousness,” a spirituality and connection to the land, inherited from his Native American and African American ancestors. The artist himself was immersed in the Civil Rights struggle and is a lauded member of the National Academy of Art, but he resists depicting overt themes of ethnicity or culture. Saturated with color and illusion, Mayhew’s works evoke both the earthly and the transcendental. Twelve of his luminous paintings are on display in this calendar.
