Frida Kahlo (1907–54) created the wedding portrait Frieda and Diego Rivera two years after she married Diego Rivera. The painting portrays Rivera as a substantive figure holding a palette and paintbrushes in one hand, and Kahlo’s hand in the other. Kahlo appears diminutive in comparison, tilting her head towards Rivera with her feet barely touching the ground. Both artists are stiffly posed and unsmiling.

The pigeon drifting above Kahlo’s head holds a banner that says, “Here you see us, me Frieda Kahlo, with my dearest husband Diego Rivera. I painted these pictures in the delightful city of San Francisco California for our companion Mr. Albert Bender, and it was in the month of April of the year 1931.”
