Cathy Lu is a 2022 SECA Art award recipient at SFMOMA and her work is now being shown on the 2nd floor in the SECA exhibition.
Lu's work manipulates traditional Chinese art objects and symbols as a way to deconstruct the assumptions we have about Asian American identity and cultural authenticity. By creating ceramic-based sculptures and large-scale installations, she explores what it means to be both Asian and American, while not being entirely accepted as either. Unpacking how experiences of immigration, cultural hybridity, and cultural assimilation become part of the larger American identity is central to her work.
Cathy lives and works in Richmond CA.
About the SECA Art Award:
Since 1967, the SECA Art Award has honored more than seventy Bay Area artists with an exhibition at SFMOMA and an accompanying publication. The award distinguishes Bay Area artists whose work, at the time of nomination, has not received substantial recognition from a major institution. The 2022 SECA Art Award Exhibition is open, free to the public, located on the 2nd floor of SFMOMA.
