San Francisco printer Jack Stauffacher's experiments with wood type expanded its formal possibilities. He was a renowned printer for 80 years and operated Greenwood Press in the Bay Area. Stauffacher's typographic experiments featuring bold layers of letters in black, blue, or red showcase the expressive capabilities of type. His refined, graphic style gained him recognition in traditional fine printing and modern art. Examples of his wood and metal type designs can be found in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
