Henri Matisse Femme au chapeau 1000 Piece Puzzle

Exclusive to SFMOMA.

First exhibited at the 1905 Salon d’Automne in Paris, Femme au chapeau is perhaps the best-known painting from the twentieth-century’s first art movement—Fauvism. The French term fauve (wild beast) became forever associated with artists of Matisse’s generation who exhibited brightly colored canvases painted in this style. Femme au chapeau marked a radical change from the subtle brushwork of Matisse’s earlier paintings to a more expressive individual manner. His use of non-naturalistic colors and embrace of an unfinished look seemed shocking to the viewers of the day.
