Born in South Africa to a jewelry making family, Philippa Roberts was naturally drawn to working with metals and stones. She studied metal design and photography at Miami University (in Ohio) and earned a BFA degree. Philippa then moved to San Francisco in 1995 to begin her career in jewelry design. She first worked for different designers to develop and hone her skills and to learn how to run a small business.
Philippa's early designs were made of basic sterling silver and pearl construction. She has since expanded her line by integrating silver and gold with different colored stones, adding texture, shape and hue to many of her designs. Philippa creates all the original pieces by carving in wax or fabricating in metal.
In 1996, Philippa established her first studio in her home. What started as a basement business has developed into a larger design studio. She now works from a new studio in her first retail shop on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland. Using silver as her main medium, Philippa creates necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings that can be worn formally or informally, with an appeal to all ages.
